FAQs
What are CDBG-DR Projects?
The Community Development Block Grant - Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program is an initiative by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide financial assistance to cities, counties, and states affected by major disasters. Unlike regular CDBG funds which are allocated annually, CDBG-DR funds are specially appropriated by Congress in response to specific disasters. These funds aim to address long-term recovery needs, particularly in housing, infrastructure, and economic recovery, that aren't met by other forms of federal assistance, insurance, or other recovery sources. The program places a strong emphasis on rebuilding in a resilient manner, reducing future risks, and ensuring that aid reaches those most affected, especially low- and moderate-income communities.
What are damage assessments?
Similar to an insurance adjustment, where an adjuster will inspect the property for damages, take photos and measurements of the structure, and then write an estimate representing the repairs needed. That is exactly what a CDBG-DR Damage Assessor does. The biggest difference, is there is no insurance policy, there are Federal Regulations and Program Policies that require adherence.
Who should take this training?
Individuals interested in participating in disaster recovery efforts, professionals from the construction, real estate, and insurance sectors, local government officials, and anyone keen on understanding the nuances of CDBG-DR damage assessment.
Do I need experience to take this training?
NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NEEDED. Most of the time CDBG-DR Damage Assessors have a background in Insurance Adjusting. However, I believe teaching you specifically this type of inspecting, data collecting, and estimating may make you better off than if you had experience in something similar.
How long is the training?
Training is self-paced and online. So you can take as long as you need. There are multiple modules and one must be completed before moving to the next. Building a foundation so you are ready for the field!
